    Paint woes

    Hi Folks
My 2004 V8 petrol disco, dark blue is starting to loose some of its paint in patches. Claimed it on insurance when a car wash took it down to primer on the roof channels, but I'm now seeing it on the back door and on the front side panel, although there it's just has a dull spot.

The old girl has only done 63K so I dont know whether to off load it before the paint detiorates any more, and get a new Defender (if I can talk the Mrs around).

Question..........can anyone suggest a way to halt this issue, The Paint shop said it may have been damaged in transit and repainted. I bought it new as a demo and they have no record of any such repairs. Would appreciate any suggestions or advice.

I have the same problem with my D2, same colour but '03. The blue is coming off in a few patches along the gutter on one side of the roof and in the top channel of the guards where the bolts are. It must have been like this for a long time because the white primer that has been revealed has deteriorated and surface rust beginning to show at one point on the roof.

Mine had been serviced "by the book" since new by the dealer before I bought it but the paint warranty section of the book has never been filled out, so I'm certain the annual inspections were never done. If the inspections had been done, the peeling paint would have been noticed and repaired when the warranty was still current...

Pretty lame on behalf of considering the amount of money that the dealers charge for a "service".

I tried to claim under the anti corrosion warranty but the dealer claims that Land Rover Australia denied the claim because the paint warranty had expired and the anti corrosion provision only applies to actual rust holes through metal, not surface corrosion - WTF?? They even went to say that the car had been repainted and that the repair must be sub standard. Total BS of course, the bolts holding the guards on have never had a spanner on them, no evidence of any sort of repair, but the paint has peeled of next to the bolts in patches.

A nice loophole indeed for LRA, it would be very unlikely for a galvanised panel to rust through or for a chassis member to suffer the same fate within the warranty period. The anti corrosion warranty that is trumpeted therefore isn't worth a pinch of excrement.

It looks to me like an adhesion issue between the primer and colour coats. Land Rover must have had some sort or interruption on their paint line or a contamination problem.

I would just be careful with high pressure sprays, these are pretty harsh if the water jet gets under a paint edge.

If you pay a dealer for servicing, make sure they do the annual paint and anti corrosion inspections and record it!

I'm just going to get the roof touched up and enjoy the vehicle. Other than this irritating defect, it's the best vehicle I've ever owned. ACE is ace!

    Cheers, Andrew

    Thumbs up Paint

JAM JOB money for jam--dealers do not like spending money on quality repairs--always take cheapest quickest quote!!! Take it to a reputable panel and paint mob they will put you in the picture of what has been done previously and possible avenues for repair [repaint]
