well i think ive finall sorted out the rough idel and the high fuel consumption!!!

the only thing left to do was a compression test....but no one has ever done one around here on a TD5, so i got hold of an old TD5 injector pulled it apart modified it and performed the test!
cyl#1 240psi all the rest 260psi...hmmm no compression. 19.5:1 comp ratio should be closer to 400psi static!
so i wipped the head off and found 2 broken PLASTIC head dowles. they
had allowed the head to move backwards by about 3mm, that was enough to let the steel ring on the head gasket to cross over the cut out for the exhaust valve not sealing each cylinder so the compressed gasses were jumping between cylinders. the head gasket rings have damaged the alloy head, but hopefully the head shop can skim enough off.

so all in all im pretty impressed as i had the disco on the dyno a few months back and with a tombie chip and no compression and she still made 86.9kw at the wheels

i put the excessive fuel consumption down to using more right foot to compensate for the loss of compression/power.

    cheers phil
