Gday All,
I started to replace the uni's on the front shaft today, armed with the step by step instuctions from the Discovery2.co.uk site and having done a couple many years ago got stuck into it about 4pm today..
Got the greasable 1 out and replaced without to many dramas...But my god once I started on the non-greasable 1's and after 1.5hrs on the first one, soaked them in penetrate and will try again tomorrow after work..
As im in no hurry to get the car back on the road I can take this approach, and if it takes a couple of more days of a couple of hours after work then thats fine, but glad im not paying someone to do it...
I may wish I did if it gets any harder...The L/R designers should be given a rocket for that effort of fitting non-greasable uni's all round.
Cheers Ean
PS forgot to add they are the originals so they have done 220,000ks
Wait till you split that double banger!!!!

Well attacked the double cardon joint today and to my surprise they seperated easier than I expected...maybe the soaking overnight helped..
The uni near the transfer case was in not bad nick and there was still a reasonable amount of grease still in the roller needles, but the other uni had 2 badly rusted caps and the other 2 were fine...The rusted ones looked as tho they had never had grease in them from the start..
Felt good when I seen that, feeling as tho it has been a worthwhile job..
Now for the centre bearing..Whoever designed that needs to be reemed with the rough end of a pineapple...How the hell that bearing comes out of there is anybody's guess...Ended up giving up and will try again tommorrow, will need to make up some sort of slide hammer to get that out..
OH well it will all be worth it...any ideas on how that bearing comes out will be great..
Thanks and Cheers Ean
brute force, hold the ignorance.
have fun this is the hard bit. getting the bearing out without damaging anything it runs on.
as a hint without actually donning the stripey apron.
the old school tricks applied right work real nice.

Well I got stuck into them after work today, and borrowed a tool from a mate and got it out within 1 minute..It was a slide hammer with a fitting on the end like a umbrella and it just opened up inside the bearing 2 slides on the hammer and presto..
Putting it back wasn't as easy as lining that centre bearing up whilst tring to get the uni in the frame was fun..
Anyway its back on the car and about to test drive it, so see how it goes..
Cheers Ean
