    Disc Backing Plates

My 2000 model Discovery 2 just jettisoned a rear disc brake backing plate, which I am guessing is a legacy of last years Gunbarrel Highway & CSR trip.
On further inspection I notice that the other side is cracked around the mounting bolts as well.

My question is, are the D1 & D2 rear backing plates the same?

Dunno but I know a few LR mechanics who remove them to stop stones being caught up on the disc. Maybe you've saved yourself a job.

D1 and D2 are quite different, new ones are cheap if Erich (Bundelene) doesen't have a good second hand one.

I don't use them on my own D2 rear as they kept failing due to cracking.

We removed them from the build of our daughters car to eliminate an awful squeel - could have reset them but where she lives they get gummed up with mud and stones and probably wear the discs.

Our own Defender still has backing plates all round, but not for long - I seem to manage to get stones caught and secondly, sooner than later the back ones will crack, rattle and fail.

There are 3 different types for the D2, front left front right and rear.

Wouldn't the rear be different left to right?
