    D2 TD5 Alternator

Looks like my nephew's alternator is about to pack it in.

I previously bought an alternator & it was quite expensive.
I had to get the car back on the road so this is why I bought a new one.

    Can these alternators be rebuilt?
Who in Melbourne would you recommend?
    What sort of cost?

    Thanks

    Chuck

My alternator packed up in Oct 08, the Auto Electrician I took it to reconditioned it. Cost was about $800. All was well until last weekend when it packed up again. This time the Auto Electrician replaced the alternator with a new one. $810 for parts and $356 for labour for a grand total of $1166. There was 2.5 hours labour as they had to remove a couple of other things to get to the alternator, (power steering pump and air-con compressor I think). Whilst alot of money if I had my time again I would want the new alternator first time round as the reconditioned one only lasted 14 months and 26000 km.

These are Townsville prices so I guess maybe a little cheaper down south.

Had to get mine replaced at a simular cost, was in a hurry and did not have the time to do it myself. Oil had leaked into the back of the altenator and destroyed the carbon bushes and the commutator.

One auto elec I went to told me they are the same as some of the ones fitted to some toyota hilux's and from a casual glance they looked identical! I used to own an imported Surf and the alt was very simular, vacum pump on front and the oil lines at the rear.

I was going to do a bit more investigating but ran out of time, This might be worth looking into a bit further, you might be able to save a few bucks?? It might be a total waste of time too??

    Good Luck Andrew
