mate...spend the money on your d1, unless you know your buying a real gem. I bought a 2000 d2 v8 auto and although it's a beaut to drive (compared to my swb) I've spending a fortune getting it reliable, even though it has full service history. The faults with them are common, as you will see from the forums and fixing them is over the top expensive. Read the forums, list the faults and check (or get profesionally checked) any vehicle you think about purchasing for them. In hindsight I would have gone the d1, put in a 4.6, some good suspension and tyres and had a vehicle just as capable without the tecnological dramas. Just my oppinion, and I'm sure to be shot down in flames, but thats why you've asked.

    I'd go the d2

Yeah they all have their fair share of problems, I have a "96" D1 v8 and a "02" d2 v8 both have given me square eyes from reading the "how to's" on this fourm but keeps me busy! I like the D2 for the extra space in the rear and looks better also. Not sure about the TD5 as I'm a V8 man. If you do go D2 make sure you get one thats Centre Diff Lock enabled mine didn't and I regret it now.

    Cheers Ted.

Hi, this is one of those "how long is a piece of string" questions.

It will depend on budget first and how much maintenance repair work you can/ will do yourself. What are your problems?

I love my D2 TD5. IMO it is a far more refined vehicle than a D1. But problems happen with all vehicles, some just do it differently. I wanted Diesel because where we are and where we travel has numerous problems with petrol sniffing jerks who steal your fuel. Diesel is easier to get in some parts also. Though this is changing. Not least is the ability to average 900km to a tank. TD5s can have some little issues, as can the TDi in the D1.

As mentioned though some of the gizmos can give troubles, but like anything only if left uncared for. Some people hope the problem will go away.
IE. the 3 amigos can now be easily fixed but can also be costly depending on who and where you get it repaired. Price range from $200 yourself to $3000 from a dealer (who mmay still not fix it). SLS can be an issue around the age most D2s are at now, so this needs to be considered. Simply buy a coil model if you were concerned.

By staying with the V8 you will mainly get body upgrades if going to the D2.

    Cheers

not much left of the D1 V8 in the D2,,,

    doesnt mean its particularly better,

    having owned both,
the D2 is a far superior vehicle.

and the D3 that better again.
