Oil leak to rocker cover TD5 found at last

Hi there, I had an oil leak somewhere on the engine, the oil saturated the started motor, the auto electrician stripped and fitted a "repair kit" from the land-rover agent. when I removed the plastic cover over the radiator (4 screws and 10 sec) I found the problem. Previously I had purchased a new rocker cover gasket, thinking that it was the culprit. The front of the rocker cover has a large black plastic plug, about 40 mm dia, the oil had been seeping from the cover for a long time. The plug has a large oval "O" ring and this had become hard over the last nine years, allowing oil to seep out and run down the front of the engine and then to populate the rest of the engine and transmissions etc. What a mess! In fact the plug was very loose in its hole.
I applied some black RTV silicone to the rim and pushed it back in, gave it a 1/4 turn and left it to set for one hour. Presto....no more oil leaks.Degreased and pressure cleaned the entire unit, 2 weeks later not a drop of oil on my nice clean engine....

Well done. I recall reading about this on one of the UK Disco forums. Apparently common problem. Come to think of it , it is deteriorated O rings that create most of TD5 issues such as oil in injector harness, fuel pressure regulator leak, fuel cooler leak. What we should look at is replacing these O rings with more heat & fuel resistant material. I'm certain these are available.
    Cheers..B
