Towing a "Sankey" with a Disco

    Hi all,

Picked up a Sankey type trailer yesterday - using a friends 90 with NATO hitch.

A few pics of it are below, it's the start of a camper project.

Firstly though it needs to do some work so I need a hitch and the wiring sorting. Wiring is OK, hitch, well I'm here to see if you guys have any ideas? I can go for a NAto hitch, or change for a 50mm ball easily enough (I think the pin can be removed and swapped) which would suit most of my needs (not going to off-road it seriously I don't think).

The big question is how to fit it high enough on the Disco so that it tows level? Any ideas, I tried searching the web and the forum but haven't found much. Hoping for a simple (read cheap) way of doing it.

If all else fails I'll extend the draw bar and fit the coupling lower down, but I'd like to keep it "standard" as possible.

Pics below for your amusement. It is an ex-MOD reserve trailer, never used, just stored for 6 years, and didn't even make the spray shop for cammo colours

It's made by a company called Kings who make specialist trailers for motorway maintenance and MOD amongst others.

Knott-Avonride coupling, their parts catalogue shows various couplings available from different size rings to standard 50mm balls.

    Running a Knott-Avonride Indespension set-up (I think)

    Ok, that worked I think!

So, back to the question...anyone towing one of these with a D2?

Also, it needs an extra coat of paint so I'm open to ideas for colours. I think the inside will be done with anti-slip floor paint, and the underside will get some stone chip protector that is black.

I was thinking white with green Land Rover ovals on the rear quarters. I could colour code it to my truck which is silver, but then I may change my truck and also think metallics are a pain to touch-up when damaged.

    Thanks, Martin

(PS - if a mod wants to delete some of the above to tidy things up please do - sorry )

dont put the non slip paint inside of it. normal driving and jostling will turn it into a sanding plate that will kill the underside of whatever you put in it.

Thanks Dave, that does seem like a good point. THey do the same paint without the sand in it so I'll go for that I think, and I have some chequer plate kicking around that I could line the centre of the load bed with instead.

We have been talking about colours from G4 orange to silver to match the Disco. I think I've decided on white though. Would look good with some black details, a bit of aluminium chequer plate protection, and some Land Rover ovals

Still working on how to tow the thing behind the D2...need to lift my current towbar by 6". Would like to leave the trailer standard really as eventually it will be sold on.
