    Drawer slides? Options?

    Hi all,
I'm going to build my drawers for the back of the disco next weekend and was wondering your thoughts on drawer slides options. Mind you i don't want actual metal slides more of something less complicated. I was thinking either something like an old skateboard rail slide attached to the bottom of each draw of perhaps routing some yellow tongue (as in flooring) into the drawer bottoms. I look forward to your ideas.

    Thanks in advance

    Adam

If you just want something "slippery" to assist the drawer in sliding in & out, try some UHDPE from any decent plastics supplier - you should be able to buy it in strips.

However, the big disadvantage with this style of drawers is that you cannot slide it completely out without the drawer falling out onto the ground. In my opinion, you can't beat the steel drawer runners for this - they're relatively cheap and easy to come by. I've still got a spare set out in the shed that I haven't put to good use yet - tossing up between building a fridge slide or a slide out cooking bench in the camper trailer.

    Hi Sven,
I'm on my third version of rear drawers so thought I'd give you some comments:

As a disco owner space is a premium so fully extendable slides not only allow the drawer to fully extend as BMKal notes but also they are narrow and allow you to maximise the drawer width in the available space.

I recommend totally enclosing your drawers with as small gaps in the front as you can get. The reason being dust. Can't keep it out completely but will delay/minimise.

Further to last point, downside of the fully extendable slides is that dust gets into the slides (eventually) and you need to remove and clean from time to time. So, in deciding which brand to get, make sure you get ones that allow you to easily disassemble the slide to remove the drawer so you don't have to unscrew the complete slide off. The alternative to slides are to use cam followers and angles. More robust, dust not an issue but take up more space and can't get open drawer fully.

Option for locking is window slide bolts. I use 'mini' locks. Use the 8mm steel bolts not the 6mm aluminium ones and try to keep the hole into which the bolt slides a close slide fit to avoid the drawer moving around.

If you are going to have a fridge make sure you put it on the opposite side to the radio aerial window to minimise interference.
    Cheers

Thanks for the advise. In regards to the radio, i've just connected an earth wire from the fridge lead to the body and it stops that interference.

if you want a cheap option for sliders rather than proper bearing runners, plastic/nylon kitchen chopping boards cut up in strips make excellent low friction slides.

but i agree on other posts. get some proper hd drawer slides off fleabay and do it properley. ones that lock in an open position are the go. soo many times i would have jammed my fingers in the drawers if i didnt have the slides that lock in the out position.
