Thread: Glenorchy Dormobile

Hello all,

We have finally taken possession of our new Series 2A 1962 Dormobile after purchasing it in Queensland a couple of months ago, pre lockdown.

In the last week it has been driven from Queensland to Melbourne by its previous owner and put on the Spirit of Tasmania unaccompanied where we picked it up the Devonport side. It’s an original Dormobile conversion which sleeps 4. It has a more modern 200TDi motor with freeway axles so sits comfortably at freeway speeds and a bit more grunt and a bit more reliable than the old motors. We purchased this soon after my mum, Judith, died but has been in lockdown in Queensland since then. Mum was always an enabler of our dreams and so I wanted part of her estate to go toward continuing that adventurous aspiration. With her love of botany (being a keen gardener and botanical artist) we hope to visit many places in her car.

A big thank you to the previous owner, Ben Sheppard who has been fantastic at helping us make this dream happen, and for all his great work on getting the vehicle to this standard. We promise to be good custodians and do our best to continue to improve this classic vehicle!

Yesterday we took it for it's Tassie pit pass and it was pinged on a number of small things I can fix, but also a couple I'll get the local mechanics with more tools to have a go at. One of these is the old landy lean (leans 42mm+) and so booked into a local leaf spring repairer to have a go at levelling her.

This landy has a sibling which is under resto (see Glenorchy 109 series 2a thread). That one is more original where as the Dormobile already has a bunch of modifications so feel reasonably comfortable in continuing to improve within the spirit of the vehicle but maximising usability. She is missing her original rear cupboard and has a chipboard replacement. Will slowly work out what I think is best for us here being a family of four.
