    Scan Gauge vs Faultmate MSV2

Looking into purchasing one of these units, have read everything I could find here (mostly on the scan gauge). Fitting into a 2000 D2, 4.6V8 (changed after the usual issues), coils not EAS but ACE.

Both units seem to function well as a diagostic tool and fault clearer, but the scan gauge does act as a gauge. The faultmate has benefits in regards to EAS that I don't need plus a cost that simply doesn't compare.

    1. Will the faultmate do anything that is useful the scan gauge won't?
    2. Is either able to integrate to a PC interface and if so benefits?
    3. Other options out there.

To the best of my knowledge the Scangage can do the ECU for the vehicle but not the SLABS, ABS or BCU modules.

So it won't reset 3 amigos?

    Scagauge II

I have a Scangauge II. As Mike said, it can't do SLABS etc so it can't reset the three amigos or any faults codes controlled from those units. It is purely for the ECU. That said I find it very useful in that it provides those "Trip Computer" functions that you don't get on the D2 (or D2a like mine).

That said, I am unfamiliar with the Faultmate so I couldn't offer a real comparison for you.

The ScangaugeII is not a diagnostic tool, it is additional gauges, I have one for the Puma and it will only display and allow you to clear DTC's on the ECM as already mentioned, won't do any other ECU's. I have also found it will only display DTC's on the Puma when the check engine (MIL) light is illuminated. In this case the faults can be cleared. This may be different on an non-CANbus system like the D2a but it certainly won't see any other ECU's.

Having also had RovacomLite (precursor of Faultmate) when I had the D2a if you want to do diagnostic trouble shooting and interface to other ECU's then this is what you need. The ScanGauge is really designed to sit in the OBD port and provide realtime extra gauge information.

Derek thanks for the useful info. It confirms an issue I have - I have several fault codes which I know are there (esp. EGR) but because the engine check light is not coming on I can't see them and hence I can't show the dealer.

I can see them with Pete's BAS tool, but I am planning on returning that as it won't read my ECU for some reason (though it can read fault codes).

Is there any way to get that engine check light triggered so I can see the codes?

    Thanks Gav

thanks for everyone's replies. I got a scangauge and will probably eventually end up with a FM as well. While I'm sure it's actually quite simple in execution, it really does display quite a lot of info (especially considering it's real time). It really show off the inadequacies of the std temp gauge for instance, mine starts to move at around 50, hits middle at 74 and stays there right up to 98.

What are peoples experiences with programming custom settings for non std gauge displays. I know that not may vehicles support auto trans temps but could you get a sender from a supported model and fit it (and work out where it had it go to send signal)
