Do ECUs self learn whilst driving

The D2 is now running, but has a High Compression motor ECU in it, my D2 is a Low compression engine.
Wondering it the ECU will compensate whilst driving "Self Learn sort of thing"
It's running a bit lumpy, but it's now running. All fault codes are gone.
Do I need to take it to a dealer and have the ECU reprogrammed to Low Compression?

Self learning is restricted to the ECU measuring a sequence of sensor inputs and adjusting the injector timing and ignition timing accordingly.

If your MAF, idle valve, and temp sensors are all good, then there should be no issues with a low comp engine.

Are you running lambda (CO2) sensors?

Yes, we have forward sensors before the Cats.

Then the ECU should compensate if it picks up an incorrect air/fuel ratio (AFR).

Are you sure all manifolds are tight with no leaks? All vacuum pipes sorted? Is there a non-standard cam in the new engine?

I'ts an existing Engine, all pipes manifolds etc are tight and new gaskets.

OK, then it could be that the factory maps cannot accommodate the low compression engine.

Which ECU is fitted? 14CUX or the Bosch Motronic?

I would think the HC map would pull back the timing compared to a LC map and you may lose performance and economy.
    However I am only guessing.

The do learn but not much.. typically for the early systems its a case of it remembers where it was last at and starts from there instead of from scratch, later systems adapt running conditions to your normal driving style.

    thanks ,the ECU is from a D2 2003 so I guess it's a later model D2a ECU
    mine is a 2000 model D2

gonig to take it for a road test of a few kms today and see if it improves
