OBD reader
Hi, a mate of mine has just got a wireless OBD reader and 'app' for his smart phone, apparently the device plugs into the diagnostics port and the phone reads it, giving him a dashboard style display and the ability to reset faults etc, cost? less than NZ$30.00
Does anyone have any experience with these? any good?

I would be interested to know if they are compatible with my P38 and how to get hold of one too!
Might search the app store now...

There is a good summary of what model coverage an OBDII reader has on the Robinson Service website:

Hi, he got a ELM327 from 'dealextreme.com' and is using it in a Holden Captiva. Yes a late model car, which has given him no end of trouble and is OBD 2, BUT, there must be an OBD 1 available I would have thought.

Hi Jack,
OBD-1 was basically a failed standard, so you'll struggle to find a generic reader.
If you want to play with OBD-2 instruments you really need something post 1996 with a petrol engine or post 2004 for a diesel. I'm not sure about the V8 Disco 1's, but the Disco 2 V8's have reasonable OBD-II pid coverage, whereas the TD5 reports a handful of things like road speed, rpm, throttle position and calculated load. P38a's have similar coverage to the V8 discos.
cheers
Paul
