    P38A Diagnostics

    Hey folks,

Just joined the P38 club on Saturday (99 HSE).

So I am now in the process of fixing all the "little" things that are wrong with it.

It appears that a diagnostic tool is almost a must have. So - what are peoples thoughts here?

Faultmate? They seem to be about AU$700
TestBook? are these purchasable as an individual? Cost?

    Where to buy etc..

    Immediate uses:
    - program a couple of keys fobs
    - checkbook symbol randomly appearing on the HEVAC

    Thanks all

Welcome to the P38 club. Dont think you will be disappointed as long as you keep on top of maintance.
As for Faultmate probably the best there is but not cheap. Avalable from PaulP38a at Hardrange http://www.hardrange.com/
Also look at Nanacom Evo ?? A good alternative. Again from Paul I think or direct from BBS Blackbox Solutions Ltd. -- Products Page
Testbook I think is dealer only but they do come up from time to time.

You will also so need something to reset EAS faults. I had an EAS Kicker from BBS recomended.

Check other threads on here about your HEVAC problem but start looking at the wiring

All the best with your new toy

the cheapest way to fix your EAS is to get a cable from Paul @ hardrange (he lives in the Canberra region ---well over the border in Qbn I gather), download the free software from http://www.rswsolutions.com/ .

For other stuff, Faultmate or Nanocom is the way to go.

Good luck with it all..."P38-itis" is contagious, addictive and (trust me...) there's no cure

PS: check out "common problems and fixes" for P38 in www.rangerrovers.net ... there's a mine of information on lots of stuff, with significant contributions from members of this forum

I already have landrover-itis. This P38 is replacing the '89 classic sitting in the yard with a suspected big end bearing failure.

My history includes several series 3's and Defender TDi... I have considered myself a lost cause many years ago.

You cannot program key fobs with a Nanocom, Faultmate, or Testbook. It's a "buy a new one" issue. Even then, you have to specify which fob you want, no.1 or no.2 - and it's not easy to tell them apart. I believe it's by colour but I've never seen two fobs from the same car side by side.

Don't get sucked in by eBayers selling secondhand P38A fobs. All they are useful for is decoration.

if you have original but non functioning remotes i might be able to repair them. i have a few secondhand remotes with codes that i can program to your car, but i have to dismantle the Becm (body computer). it is also possible to fit one of the universal remote central locking systems.

I was lead to believe you could get blank keys and program them with one of those devices?

Are you saying that you can only get key fobs pre-programmed from a dealer?

Im not sure that they are a must have.
I have only just started to use a Hawkeye after owning my 38 for over 12 years.
Only once have i needed to have the EAS reset/cleared about 5 years ago.
    Its pretty simple to use.
Im waiting on the EAS adaptor to come via snail mail.

the becm is locked to one set remotes from new, but problems with the system here in Australia mean that they may have been changed, so the records kept by Landrover may be wrong. when you order a $500 remote (if they are still available) it may not work with your car, as it was made to the old code and Landrover will kick and scream about giving your money back. remotes from other p38s can be used if they are the correct frequency or come with the correct receiver, and must come with their BAR or FOB code or the becm from the vehicle they were used in.
