    New Evo questions.

Just been playing with the new toy and had a few questions, in a V8 D2.

    1. Seems to turn off after a random (random in the sense that I'm not timing it). From reading it could be running out of memory and shutting down. Don't have SD card yet either., which leads to...

    2. What is the optimum size card. They're pretty cheap now so can get a reasonable size but no need to overkill.

    3. Don't seem to have access to VALBCU.app. Just goes to screen with background but nothing opens.

    4. Am I able to alter any setting of the Motronic ECU itself? In the Motronic/roughness section there's a listing for knock detection active/inactive. I definitely have sensors but they are listed as inactive and unless I'm running good fuel and octane boosting it it'll ping, std fuel or worse yet plant fuel and it sounds like there's a chain gang under the bonnet. Can I reset this to active?

    5. Are we able to alter what can be seen on each instrument display screen? The temp and speed is fine but some of the others on further pages I'd prefer to be on the first screen.

Thats it for now, thanks in advance for any help that can be offered and thanks to BBS for a great product and service.

First thing is to ensure that you have updated to the current version of firmware.

    1. Sounds odd, but will be unrelated to sdcard. The only time I have the unit shut down is if there are communication problems which cause the EVO to lock up.

    2. Maximum is something like 8gb, but even that is overkill. Recording inputs for 30 minutes only generates files of under 250kb so a 8Gb card would give you over 30hrs recording time. The main thing is to use a quality card. I'm using a San Disk Ultra and that has been rock solid.

    3. I don't have any issues with the current firmware.

    4. Refer to BOSCH MOTRONIC M5.2.1 (SM009) for the details on the module. Check up on the V8 engine management system in RAVE for expected behaviours, and also have a look at the European On-Board Diagnostics Workbook PDF on the RAVE CD.

The roughness readings are inputs so I don't think you can change these. RAVE seems to indicate that the sensors are not active below 1800rpm. see page 18-2-48 of RAVE.

Also note that "If the OBD system registers a HO2 sensor fault, misfire detection, catalytic converter monitoring and fuel mixture control are interrupted until the fault is rectified." (page 31 of the EOBD Workbook. talr000e.pdf on RAVE CD)

    5. No. I think there was some discussion that this might be changed in the future.

    cheers

I recently bought an 8gig SD card and this and advice via the BBS forums have some solutions to my issues.

#1 & 2. Has resolved since fitting the card, though at times I still have it "hang" where it will stop live display of data.

#3. Was advised that I needed to update to the latest firmware. It was actually displaying the .app extension on the menu screen, the update removed this and so now it works. Note for future references, if you've bought an Evo and it displays the file name extension you probably need to update the firmware. But check back to BBS first to make sure.

#4. Still investigating, but since referencing RAVE it may have interference from a repeating cam angle sensor fault.

#5. Screen reversal is now in place with the latest update it seems but still nothing on customisation. The reversal can only be done by checking a box at the start of the update procedure. If you've updated and want to reverse later or revert back then you'll need to run the update again. (NOT sure if you need to revert back to previous version prior to running update again).

Can anyone advise on cam angle sensor issues? It's buried in areas that I haven't seen since I rebuilt it last and don't want to think about digging in there unless it's absolutely necessary.
