Looking at purchasing a diagnostic unit for a TD5 Discovery and notice that there are quite a few variants out there. Is the Nanocom Evo2 the most suitable unit these days for the regular Joe? What to do... Find/diagnose faults, clear faults, program a key etc.

Mike, if you have the time and inclination, I'm sure many would appreciate the rationale behind the recommendation - hopefully without starting WW3
I already have an Evo2 and am unlikely to upgrade beyond my D2a, but many others will upgrade in due course.

Is the faultmate as well featured as the Nanocom Evo2? I'm trying to work out why it is almost twice the cost and locked to a specific VIN.

and, if I can piggy back on to Slunnies thread, what if you only want to do TD5 engine stuff, no suspension, fobs, etc ?

Thanks Sheerluck, checking out the BBS website was what led me ask the question. From what I could see, it looked like the faultmate didn't do as much as the Nanocom, but it was more expensive so it didn't make a lot of sense, especially considering it was the same manufacturer. The Nanocom looked like it had pages and pages of functions and into the future was able to be unlocked for other vehicles, but I now see its none of te new ones, but that said the faultmate can only be used on one specific vehicle, so a new unit would be needed for the future. That's just what I see, but that may not be all correct or fully informed.

Looking again the faultmate looks like it does the same as the Nanocom evo2, but the faultmate is more expensive and it is locked to one vehicle only, so I'm assuming when I do one day buy that RRS V8SC that I would need to buy a new faultmate.
