Nanocom Evo works on Mac with Windows 8 & VMware

Just got around (at last) to putting the latest firmware on my Nanocom Evo using:
Mac OS X 10.8.3 Mountain Lion and Windows 8 Pro 64-bit running under VMWare Fusion 5.

    All went very smoothly

    firmware question

so I take it you cant upgrade firmware without windows ?

If you went to that trouble I'm assuming its not as simple as downlading firmware to sd card on the mac and then loading firmware into nanocom from the sd card ??

    I have mountain lion 10.8.3

I'm in the process of getting a new TD5 Inside map and I don't want to brick my ECU, I uploaded the first map they gave me but the Nanocom stalled halfway and I almost freaked out, 2nd try it worked.

but I'm not happy with the new fuel map as its over boosting.

as I'll be in deep poo if I brick it in a caravan park. reluctant to put the Tombie map back now.

I'm thinking perhaps I don't have the latest firmware.
    Kernel 1.07, Main 2.2, graphic 1.4n, obd 1.04, global 20120206

rather than buy windoze & fusion Im thinking it might be cheaper to just buy an elcheapo windows netbook to do the firmware upgrade ????

I use Virtual Box plus a copy of Win XP for anything that requires venturing to the darkside.

    https://www.virtualbox.org

One member claims he has just put on the upgrade on the card, but I've not tried recently.

Current firmware is 20121031 aka v1.12. You have v1.06 installed.

1.12 has changed the method used to upload map files. I would not even contemplate a map upload unless you have 1.12 installed.

    cheers

Thanks, I just tried a programme called CrossOver which lets you run Windows apps on a Mac (without running windows) , it works - Nanocom kernal software runs but it cant see a conected Nanocom

Ok so now I'll try the virtual method & run windows.

If you try virtual box there is a trick to getting things to work properly.

You need to go into the settings for the virtual machine, click on Ports then click the USB tab. You need to add a USB Filter for the Nanocom - to do this plug the Evo in with a USB cable and click on Kernel Upgrade.

When you click the + in the USB Device Filter window you should see something like this:

Select the Nanocom from the list and you then see the USB Filter list looking like:

click OK and then start up the Windows virtual machine. You only need to create the filter once. This allows Virtual Box to take over the device from OSX when it is plugged in.

You'll need to start up the Windows Virtual machine before plugging in the EVO when you want to upgrade. You'll get prompted to load drivers, but I haven't found this to be necessary.

The other thing I do with VB is set the download folder as a permanent shared folder. This let me access the OSX download folder as if it were a network drive.

    cheers

Coonabarabran Computers to the rescue, Just took a punt & contacted the local computer man to see if he could help, He had no idea what I was talking about but was kind enough to let me plug my Nanocom into his Windows 8 PC and let me run the Kernel upgrade.

Took ahhh 7 minutes, bit I was there an hour.

saved me a lot of hair pulling & lots of $$

Ahh yes, why was I there an hour, He has an old RRC I had to check it out, has a Low range engagment issue , I'll ask about in a new post to see if we can help.

There's nothing wrong with Virtual Box (especially as it's free) but development is a little slow on it. VMWare Fusion can be bought on-line for $44 or in the shops for about $50. I'm getting heavily into VMWare at work so it kind of made sense to play withe the client version t home.

Alternatively you can just install Boot Camp and have the Mac boot to either OS X or Win.

Glad you got the Nanocom up to date. My next challenge is to get the Bell Auto unit working on Windows 8 ... so far not happening. May have to put a Win XP VM on as well.

    fw 1.12 installed
...... and sucessfully loaded new Td5-Inside map to ECU,
could almost hear my heart thumping, as it seemed to hiccup at about 90% loaded, almost euphoric feeling to then turn the key & hear the sweet sound of a running Td5.
