which code reader for a Discovery 1

hi.. have been reading a lot of post on this forum and information from all sorts of suppliers for code readers /scan tools but find it pretty complex......
Can someone recommend one they have used on a discovery 1 please.
Something farly basic would be fine..
    thanks.

As i understand it only some of the Disco 1's (later models) had the ability to use any kind of fault reader.
I have heard that later airbag equipped models were compatible with them as were the vehicles with automatic transmissions but i could be very wrong

You don't say whether you're talking of the V8 or TDi, and which year. If you're talking TDi, then you have no chance. The TDi has no electronics, and you communicate with it via hand gestures and smoke signals.

It may help if you can tell us what you're trying to achieve or diagnose, as only the later V8 (96-98) had an OBD2 connector, but the 14CUX ECU is so primitive that the hand gestures and smoke signals may be more effective.

In the USA code readers were standard fitment to 14CUX models.

I imported a used one for mine.

You need to add some wires to the ECU plug for it but it is reasonably straight forward.

    June 94 Disco 3.9 V8i Auto

I just got mine back from the LR mechanics, and they used a scan tool to pick up a fault with the coolant temp sensor.

No idea where you would get one though.

    Thanks for replies..
It is a V8 with build date late 96. It has what looks like the connector for a scan tool under the panel, on left side of steering wheel.
I don't mind using hand gestures and smoke signals (my first car was a 1938 ford 10.. ) and when I see a distributor with a vacuum advance i really feel at home..
It is a friends car and some time ago would start and idle but lost all power under any load, almost undriveable and has not been driven for some time.
Yesterday it started ok, idled ok, during initial warm up, say 5 mins, gave a few small backfires when throttle was opened and may have had an occasional misfire. (same feel as not enough choke in old days! too lean.. ).
After full warm up it ran ok. for a short run..
Seems unlikely problem has just gone away permanently..
Have read many post listing suggestions for similar problems but it would be useful if I had a code reader to point me in right direction..

The Hawkeye has support for D1's from 95-96 onwards.

    The D1 unlock supports:
Diesel EMS 96-98 (Bosch EDC 1.3.1)
    Petrol EMS 95-98 (14CUX)
    Petrol EMS 96-98 (GEMS)
    Petrol EMS 93-98 (MEMS)
    ABS 95-96 (WABCO C ABS) --- is the 96 a typo?? I suspect it should be 98.
    Airbag 96-98 (TRW SRS)
    Security 96-98 (10AS)

You apparently need additional cables to access the Airbag and Security modules.

    cheers

Seeing how the D1 V8 engine has so few sensors, a scan tool can't tell you much of any use. A multimeter will tell you more about MAF and TPS output than a scan tool. Ditto the temp sensor. If the D1 had oxygen sensors it could sense fuelling problems, but in Oz it doesn't. Injectors fire in 2 banks of 4, loss of one wouldn't even register.

Typical D1 problems are simple things like dirty connections, burst pressure hoses on replacement fuel pumps, stuffed ignition components etc. Fuel pressure can be checked at a Schrader valve on the fuel rail.

Thanks bee utey for advise re oxygen sensors and measuring fuel pressure. I was worried about how to check O2 sensors. So we might just start wioth the multimeter,.
I am not sure exactly how to check MAF or TPS, is this documented somewhere easy to find? or I mightg find it on this forum.
    Thanks again..

Measuring fuel pressure is easy, there's a Schraeder valve on the fuel rail. As for MAF and TPS sensors, if you search in the D1 forum (use the Google search function at the very bottom of the page, it's a little more friendly) you'll find it.
