    What to get?

I am looking at getting a diagnostic tool but am unsure as to what I need.
    I have a D3 Discovery, 2011 110 Defender 2.4TDCI.
What would be the best options to allow me to read and reset fault codes?
    Thanks Mark

If you are just looking for something with reasonable coverage and own either iOS or Android smart phone it would difficult to go past the Launch iDiag X431 tools.

The interface itself is about $100-$150. The unlock codes are $US66 per year which I believe is per manufacturer, rather than per vehicle. The site describes the unlocks as "per model", but then indicates a complete European and US unlock covers 31 "models".

http://www.x431shop.com for a US site, but there is also a distributor in Sydney.

This is a fairly recent listing of the module coverage.

If you want bells and whistles and permanent unlocking you'll need to look at the specialist diagnostic tools. To cover both a D3 and Defender your options are currently a bit more limited.

    - Black Box Solutions Faultmate
    - Hawkeye
    - Britpart Lynx

BBS are working on a D3/D4/RRS module for the Nanocom, so at some point in the future you will be able to add that to the list of options.

    cheers

I cannot wait for the D3 support in nanocom! It does pretty much everything on D2. For the price the feature set cannot be beat.

I've got a hawkeye unlocked for D2 and D3, and it works very well, but is quite limited in what it will configure in D3. It will read and clear codes from pretty much everything and it can set the EAS for certain special modes, but no calibrations. It will calibrate the SAS. It requires a special dongle for certain systems (different speed can bus, I think) which is kind of annoying. It would be nice if someone made a smart dongle that could connect at multiple speeds.
