Just unplug it and see if vehicle runs better
Just arrived back from a 3 week trip to the Cooper towing a Cub. Cleared an intermittent MAF fault in Broken Hill on the way up and it did not reppear until the last day.
During the trip the vehicle seemed to struggle, (and returned 16+L/100k, never been that high even towing our previous Jayco camper).
After reading bits on the forum I was suspecting the MAF, but it appears to be reading ok (mid 60g/h up to 650's), except it drops to 0 under full exceleration until it changes up & revs back.
Any ideas as to what to look for next.
Just unplug it and see if vehicle runs better
Mine did this last March 2013 just after I bought it, and there is a thread where I downloaded the run data and Dougal interpreted it as a dud(overreading) MAF. In my case there were no errors recorded.
Mine would rev to 3900RPM at full accelerator, then go into a big miss as the MAF voltage at the ECU dropped to zero.
New MAF and no problems since.
My fuel economy was OK at 11.4 , although it was only around town at small accelerator.

Just took car for a run with another maf. Ran a lot better, so given mine a clean with electrical contact cleaner. Let you all know the results. (Probably a new maf being required)
Cheers
For what's it is worth, and you maybe on top of this now, but try pulling out (and by that I mean carefully unscrewing) the MAP sensor in the intake manifold. They can get gunked up, especially if you still have the EGR on. Give it a clean with something like MAF cleaner.
When I was chasing similar problems on my TD5 it helped (along with a new MAF).
Hope you get to the bottom of it.
Ian.
Big D - out of interest - do you have an auto or manual? Disco or defender? EU2 motor or EU3 with NNN ECU? EGR bypassed or still connected?
Its a long time now but I think its under "instruments" and you can save it to an SD card in real time.
A couple of flat out runs will show.
Dougal may remember better than me.

Some additional information to fill in the gaps:
Discovery 1999
E2 emission standards, still running ERG
Auto transmition
Diagnostics using original Nanocom, so engine fuelling data is stored in the unit and downloaded later.
Yet to clean the MAP, but that will have to wait for the weekend.
When I downloaded the data after swapping MAF, there was still the occasional "drop to 0"under full power, but for a single time step, compared to my MAF that had the 0 over several time steps. The car still ran markedly better.
I see you had a MAF problem back in 2010 due to a blown fuse. Did you track down the cause of this?
