    diagnostic tools

    Hi, I have looked at quite a few threads regarding these.
    I do have a nanocom which is set up for a d2, and was going to get the code for the p38.
    Just a few quick questions?
    I have read that the nanocom I have to purchase 2 codes, as they do different things, and a new cable, so cost is getting up there again, this is why i haven't do it yet.
    I have also heard of a free laptop system, and then make up a wire to the car. what exactly could I do with this?
    At the moment I have the hevac playing up, and before I rip it apart - again -
    I would like to find out as much as possible.
    I believe it is a blend motor ( temperature ) but I think on both sides now.
    Will either of the tools work with this?

    You need a P38 licence either GEMS or MOTRONIC and the cable

    I see they have now split the BECM additional licences from the ECU ones so you would need this item plus the green lead

    The nanocom does it all, which none of the free systems come anywhere near to doing.

    Simon,

    I have the P38 unlock code on Nanocom if you want to try it out before you order it yourself.

    You do need a new cable but only one unlock code either Gems or Motronic depending on your engine.

    Thanks, I did get hold of bbs a few weeks back to confirm what was needed.
    So there are 2 unlock codes for the p38 gems, 1 for the engine management @ $66, the other for the operating systems @ $133, then I would need the cable @ $68, + $38 for delivery. This works out at over $300, I may as well buy a complete new unit.
    At the moment, all I want it for is the hevac.
    EAS would be good too, but at the moment, it is working ok.
    If I can find the wiring diagram for the cable I'll make my own up. cant cost more than $15.

    RSW solutions offer the free EAS software which has been great.
    They now offer a paid version which also covers other systems on the p38. I am not sure how much it covers so an e-mail to them will no doubt let you know. It is pc software and comes with the cable.

    If you bought only the software code for the P38 you can still use a generic ELM327 dongle to do most of the generic engine stuff.

    And if you can solder up a lead as well then you can get out of it much more cheaply

    The P38 OBD interface is 4800 baud serial so you won't need all the pins either

    Thanks, but have no idea what a elm327 dongle is, or what 4800 baud means.
    I have found a wiring diagram for a green cable, not sure if it is correct, but I hope so.
    What's the difference between Nanocom Evolution cables?

    Just a thought. If I was to make a cable, could I connect all the wires which are connected for the blue and the green and have a cable that works on both the discovery and p38?

    This is an ELM327 dongle it works with the free torque app on android and the paid ones like dashcommand on Ipad etc

    4800 baud serial is how we all once connected to the internet via dial up modems. You don't need all those pins connected for a serial interface.
