Undo the big brown wire off the back of the alternator (10mm nut) and slip a length of hose over the wire to stop it shorting to the engine.
hi,
i have a 300tdi defender
seems my alternator is stuffed and the batteries are now stuffed. (one was emitting gaseous smoke so i pulled them all out)
i'm going to have to drive it to a few km's to the nearest mechanic. i was thinking of connecting a jump start battery but i don't want the alternator to kill it.
so can i disconnect the alternator then connect a jump start battery to drive it? if so, what exactly need to disconnect?

When my alternator died (siezed), I removed it. Made sure none of the wires touched.
The battery ran down prety quick. VC V8 Commodore. Still got a few km though.
Being a diesel, it should last a while with you. What requires electrics in your Landy?
Oh, make sure your water pump still turns if you do.
And to start it. I assume you are going to the mechanic to swap over the alternator. As Mr Utey says, remove and isolate the main wire from the alternator. You'll know when the battery goes flat, the indicators stop working.
Well, that is what happened to me.
