I have both a Nanocom and a GAP IID for D3 and D4.
They do share a number of features, but overall the GAP tool is the better unit for the CAN bus vehicles.
It can also install remaps, which the Nanocom could also do originally but it wasn't taken up on a large scale and now I don't think any companies provide that service.
The GAP IID has access to a lot more sensors as well.
They both do fault reading and clearing.
They can both update the various modules throughout the car to the latest firmware.
I think with the GAP tool some updates are free and some are paid.
With the Nanocom I think they are all free but you need a Blackbox account to access the genesis Server.
I bought a gap tool after I already had the Nanocom unlocks and I personally think it was worth it.
I would go that way again, especially if I was starting with a Nanocom that still needed $$ spending for the unlocks.
Cheers
James
