I may have gone and done something a bit crazy and bought a G-Wagen.
Ever since I took one for a test drive back in 2011 when they were re-introduced, I have thought this might be the ideal post-Defender upgrade for me. Like a Defender on the outside, like a Range Rover on the inside. Driving position and overall feel of the vehicle is so similar to the Defender except for the fact that it's quiet, and well sealed, and the hand brake doesn't jab you in the left leg, and the door catch doesn't try to undress you every time you climb in or out.
It's due to be delivered on Friday so I will post some more photos and a bit of a more in depth review once I have it dirty. For now, here are the photos from the dealer... It was my wife's choice of colour by the way.
Of course the biggest problem I have now is that I put the Defender Day Out in my diary and now I mightn't even have a Defender to go to it in. Can I perhaps get special dispensation to bring this Weeds? I promise I will stay out of any photos.

Bit of a rude question but how much did it set you back? Also what size and type of engine?
Very nice. A good mate of mine used to have a 2002 g500 swb which I drove a couple of times and it was fantastic.
The price is a closely guarded secret, at least until I have the insurance in place. I got a quote from Allianz (my current insurer on the Defender) and when I told them the purchase price they responded "computer says no" and the insurance was declined. Apparently what I've paid is more than 30% below their expected price range. The vehicle probably has no roof or something. Nothing four years unlimited kilometer warranty can't sort out though.
It has a 2.9l V6 diesel engine that is very close to the standard TdV6 in the current Discoveries power & torque figures. Also has the Bluetec diesel exhaust cleaner which requires topping up with Adblue every 12,000km.
Bought it from a dealer in Melbourne. It's on it's way up to me on a truck as we speak (I hope). Could have been a car-sales pre-paid transport scam though...
Anyone over 30 who doesn't drink can take it for a drive... but I guess that rules out pretty much everyone on AULRO.
I have been waiting in vain for MB to release the G-Professional, but still nothing. This one came up surprisingly cheap so it's the next best thing. I could do without the colour coded bumpers, wheel arches and grille. I may be able to "Professionalise" it a bit and get rid of some of the bling. A set of black alloy rims like the Army ones is in order, with some decent AT tyres.
very nice
is that an oil cooler behind the front grill down low?, can you get b/bars for these?. think it would be leaps and bounds over the defender for comfort and performance. enjoy.
Crazy? Looks very sensible to me. I hope you enjoy it. There's an older one parks around the corner from here. The owner must commute. It has bull bar and winch. Very much looks the goods...and immaculate.
