The G beats the D - can you bear it?

The G is indeed a formidable, charismatic beast in all its guises.

The Defender just can't assimilate modern safety systems like the G can (and has), and evolve into modernity as the parent company doesn't have the order book, technical nous nor financial strength of MB.

Hence here in Aus it will soon cop the ADR guillotine due lack of mandated active and passive safety equipment.

People are dotty about the Defender, and good luck to all the tragics.

    But defence procurement has spoken.

It's goodnight irene for the old camo landy.

When the Brits took on the Argies in the Falklands 30 years ago they both blasted away with the FN-FAL 7.62mm battle rifle; Brits used semi-auto, Argies selective semi/full auto.

But the Argies had the G-wagen.

By all accounts after the debacle all the Argie G-wagens were rapidly commandeered by chuffed Brit officers.

MB wasn't happy as the junta hadn't fully paid for them!

    Says it all...treason!

You can't beat bums on seats people!

Also the "Worker/Professional" version of the G-wagen (W461), available in some markets like Europe and South Africa, and armies, will no longer be available anywahere after 2014, due to safety and emissions requirements.
The military version will continue but civilians will only be able to buy the W463 models. MB Australia currently wont sell the W461 because it only comes with one airbag.

There is quite a lot of discussion about this on various MB forums. But the W463 is at least proof that if Mercedes wanted to, they could keep the Professional on sale. Damn shame since an $80K-odd G-Prof on sale here would give Toyota a shake up in the commercial stakes. Just look at the quantity of MB Vito & Sprinter vans now in commercial fleets.
