    Non Landrover brake part information required

    Ok. As you lot may or may not know, I have a couple of old Mercs.
    One is in at the doctors. It's suffering age related problems, incontinence.
    It's brake fluid is weeping out.

    I have been told it needs new piston seals on the rear callipers. They are a 40mm piston that is quite rare. Pre '65 had a 38mm piston. Post '65 had a 42mm piston. Mine is a '65.
    I'm told the ATE calliper is a copy of a Dunlop calliper that was used on Jaguars and other English marques.

    I know there are a few enthusiasts of other marques on this forum, so, can anyone tell me, what model English cars had Dunlop rear disc brakes with a 40mm (1 9/16") piston?

    From what I can find, you're looking at an early 70's XJS or E-Type, they both have 40mm rear pistons, but I can't find manufacturer details. See if a local supplier stocks them and take your caliper round to test them out. Sorry I can't be of more help mate.

    It's been years since I fluffed about with brake cylinders. If new price is outrageous, I take them to Master Cylinder Exchange Service at Wynnum for a bore and sleeve and new piston and seals. When I had the machine shop I used to do them myself. Just bought a seal kit and did the rest in house. Can't be bothered now.

    If only it were that easy. The mechanic has fixed the front callipers. Parts are still available. The rear callipers are a different story. The mechanic has tried all his sources and some of mine. Parts are NLA. I'm going around in circles. All the Merc forums tell me "They're the same as a Jag." but when I ask "Which model Jag?", they just fluff about. They either don't know or don't want to tell.
    I have been making progress though. Most brake parts suppliers ask "What car is it for?" and when I tell them, without allowing the thought to sink in, they reply "Can't help you mate." Luckily I have found a fellow who is old school. "What's it from?" he asked. "A car and that is all you need to know." I replied.
    With that minimal information, and the callipers on the bench in front of him, we discovered he had one seal in stock, and plenty of them. Just trying to work out the dust cover now.
    Oh, Northern Brake and Clutch. Old school. Has customer service. The only ones I found who were able to assist me with brake bits for the Track trailer, the Inter and a '65 Merc.

    Hi Mick.
    Long shot I know, but you could try this mob in Adelaide.... I've been told on several occasions by several different people that they are the guys to talk to with anything older or 'different'.. We use them at work too, and they've always found the random seal kits and cylinders etc that we've needed on various tractors... Its a screenshot but it'd give u enough details to start from...
