It was a good driver and fast. The Chrysler 340TA was the best of the ones I did. Revved like a turbine. The HiPo 327 needed a higher stall converter to get it up on the cam. It had a 1960's solid lifter "Duntov" cam which I still believe was the best camshaft ever in an SBC, after marketeers all included. &000 rpm without a hiccup. It was a rocket ship if you got your boot into it.

Homestar, if you are having fuel pump problems, throw the SU pumps in the rubbish bin. They are junk, always were and always will be. Look at fuel systems on the Speedway Motors site. The Yanks do these small items so well and so well priced.

The last thing you want to do with old banger like this is start changing things and making it "unoriginal" - just change to the electronic version of the SU pumps. The issue of the original pumps is the points system and not the pump itself - like points ignition, changing over to an electronic system makes the pump very reliable.

My pump is original and is now 38 years old and still runs fine but I changed it to electronic control - this was before electronic versions were produced. Works fine.

Like LRs - go onto the Jag forums and find out what you should be doing.

As far as the Chevs into Jags - is a bit like the Holden into a Series LR - maybe a good idea at the time but destroyed values in the long term. The only way to do it was to "hot rod" the car so was really no longer a Jag but a car for Summernats.

Wherever feasible - keep the car original and do subtle performance improves that do not detract from its value. Series 2 values hit bottom a while back and good examples are on the way back up so if looked after you cannot loose.

It was a Jag forum that first mentioned ditching them. Will look over them and what makes them tick but a component that improves reliability won’t hurt the value of the vehicle. The pumps and what makes them tick are more than 40 years old now - if they need doing they need doing and a modern, reliable replacement makes more sense - the same as I would in my 101 for such things.

Don't change it - that will lower it's value. Keep it original and just get it fixed.

Appreciate everyone's concern about keeping it original, and forgive my blunt reply last night - I was pretty tired but no excuse really - but we are talking about a fuel pump or two here - that lives under a cover, under a mat, in the boot. I will be looking at the original units and will keep them short term, but if I can improve reliability with something so simple - even if it's not original, then why wouldn't I? I'm not pulling the engine out or anything.

The entire fuel system is the first thing I'll be looking at in detail to get the second tank on line, so will report back once I've given it a once over. [smilebigeye]
