And another wiring issue found and fixed - previous owner had a ‘retro radio’ installed and it sounded really funny - changed a few setting to get it to sound better and found the installer had wired both the front right and rear right speakers to the front 2 which are the only ones working... I’ve got stereo sound now... 😁. Not sure I like the unit though, it’s pretty cheap and tacky. Might see if I can find a nice old tape deck to go in there...
Well, looks like we were all wrong regarding the fuel pumps. The late Series 2’s used in tank pumps. Followed my nose and found a cover behind the back wheel - removed cover and there’s a lock ring holding the pump assembly into the side of the tank - after draining the tank, whipped this out and looks similar to the in tank pumps on many other cars I’ve worked on held onto a frame like they are. Will chase up a similar one next week. 👍
Sounds like you are having fun Gav, exploring the "Intricacies" of your new "toy", and it looks like you're pretty handy at sorting stuff!
Enjoy, Pickles.
We had a S11 V12 LWB in the same colour for years.
Rebuilt the engine when we lived in Canberra. Had it in the family room, too cold outside!
Loved it with all its little problems, none of which were too hard to fix. One must remember that before doing anything on them one must do something else first. As in to open the bonnet the door needs to be opened first. Once you get used to that idea the rest follows.
Try changing the rear hand brake pads!!
Thanks mate - haven’t seen you here for a while, hope all is well in your world. 😊
Got the new Club plates today and they are on the car now. For those wondering what happens when the Vic club plates get to 99999-H - I now know the answer. They have started a new series starting 0000-H1, 0000-H2, 0000-H3 etc. My new ones are 0027-H2. More strange plate formats to remember.
So today was the day to take a really good look over the Jag before a big club run on Sunday - that will be around 300KM so it’s longest run with me behind the wheel. Started easy with a service, oil and filter no dramas, but she swallows 8.5 litres of oil so my 8 litre oil pan was... umm... quite full after I drained the sump. 😇
Checked the fuel system over - there are small screens in the side of each carby as well as a small inline fuel filter which was changed. I don’t think the carby screens had been out for a loooong time as they were badly blocked up. All cleaned and back together, checked hoses, belts, etc. nothing to get in a twist about there.
Then thought I’d try and get it to idle a bit better - it’s always been a bit lumpy at idle although it revs freely and has enough power to get it up to... Let’s just say above 100 and leave it at that. So, basic checks first before I went near a carby. Checked plugs - not great, but ok, decided to check spark while I had one out - hmmm, pretty **** weak yellow spark, but it is a points dizzy, 40 year old car, so off with the dizzy cap to check point, etc. To my surprise someone has installed an electronic ignition kit in it (yay!) But why such a weak spark then? Looked inside the dizzy cap and found the answer - the carbon spring loaded button in the middle is gone - found it in the dizzy, coated in crud so it’s been there a while.
Will grab a new one in the morning - British Car Components have one on the shelf, so will be interesting to see how much of improvement a decent spark makes. 😊
Pulled the old bit of carbon out of the dizzy so it didn’t end up somewhere it shouldn’t, back on with the cap and it still fires straight up even with a blackened burnt out bit where the carbon is supposed to live - I really wonder how long it’s been like this?
Also found and fixed a couple of small vacuum leaks - the small vac lines have all hardened where they connect to things, so shortened them and refitted which made them tighter. Will grab some new stuff tomorrow as well.
There’s a very small coolant leak I identified early on, but tightening the hose clamp hasn’t seemed to fix it. The whole thermostat housing will have to come off to replace the small hose under this that connects the water pump to the thermostat housing - my guess is this one was in the ‘too hard basket’ when they did the other hoses. Will grab some gaskets for that too.
Oh, before all this fixed a split return hose on the power steering so I could move it without being drowned in dextron III as that crapped itself when moving it just before Corowa.
All in all, nothing under the bonnet is giving me anything too much to worry about - the rocker covers leak a bit, think the rear main does too, and the trans has a small leak at the front dripping a bit out the bellhousing, so may pull the trans at some point over Winter and fix these and see what the Borg Warner 35 might need internally while I’m at it.
Will report back tomorrow night on the improvements a properly working dizzy cap bring. 👍😊
