.... they’d decided the solution was a mixture of zinc and sulphur. But they’d still not worked out the correct proportions.

Ahh, the old zinc dust and sulphur rocket propellant - the choice of kids everywhere.

Made a few rockets myself when I was a young bloke. You used to be able to buy kilograms of zinc dust at the local hardware store for mixing with paint or .... you could mix it with sulphur for much more fun.

50c for half kilo if my memory is correct, but 1969 is a long time ago.
