The one thing that has been consistent with this whole thing is that simple information has been in-consistent, changed or withheld. There are so many competing interests at play and so much that is obviously being withheld from all sides it is impossible to place the puzzle together.

The idea of the north corridor is odd as India, Pakistan etc have some of the highest radar density in the world - and the tensions mean that you don't have unidentified planes flying around unnoticed or unchallenged.

The southern corridor is also limited as Australian over-the-horizon radar is officially known to detect missile launches in China - so heaven only knows the actual capability but you can bet your last dollar that Defence would be willing to make a serious investment to get the coverage needed to get enough warning to things heading our way.

With the Snowden revelations of late an ordinary person can reasonably assume that there is a lot going on that we don't know about and as such the idea that a plane can just disappear is at best very odd.

Sadly I think that something happened to it, be it accident or confusion that means a) the plane is destroyed and b) someone really doesn't want others to find out about how or why.

Reminds me of Korean Air flight 007. There is a lot going on in the area that the flight was going through - tensions are high.. maybe something went wrong and someone made a rash decision.

Failing a crash, that was one of my early considerations, I reviewed after confirmation of the transponder being turned off and the flight continuing a further 4-6.5 hours.

has anybody thought of the Somali pirates???? Things are getting a bit hot collecting ships for ransom, maybe planes are the next big thing???

Yeah, but the post radar communications have been announced, changed, withdrawn, talked around, and then re-instated so many times....

I don't think that is correct exactly - I think that what has happened is that everything released had to be -

Malaysian Airlines - run past the lawyers and given by someone* pretty close to the top of the management.

Malaysian government - spokesman has to be a senior minister*

* Neither of these understood the information they were supplied with, and everything they got was also filtered through several layers of bureaucracy who did not understand it either.

It is quite clear that nobody acting as spokesman initially had the faintest idea of the difference between primary and secondary radar, for a start.

It seems likely that none of them even knew about the ACARS existence until several days after the disappearance, and it is likely that it was several days before anyone, even those familiar with the technology, realised that the Inmarsat handshake signals could be used to provide a LOP (line of position).

Since these handshakes, although obviously recorded, have, I suspect, never been used in this way in the past, it would need someone to both know that they exist, and be familiar with navigation concepts such as LOPs. Once someone realised this, they would then have to find someone with the authority to get hold of the data, who would then have to convince several layers of bureaucracy that it was real. The actual calculation of the LOPs from this data would possibly even need someone to actually write or adapt software for the purpose.

As with most conspiracy theories - incompetence is far more likely than conspiracy!
