The switch for the transponder is in the cockpit so the aircrew change its settings if required - like it has a setting that if selected tells the ground there is a hijacking.

We have at least 747 and A380 Captain and other airline pilots on AULRO and I am surprised they haven't given their views on the topic as yet.

What we have here is a plausible explanation by a retired Pilot.

If this report is correct it throws cold water on that theory Arthur.

I can see the need for different settings but, can it be deactivated from the cockpit? If so it's not the magic fail-safe device it's purported to be.

all electrical devices have a fuse!

Even a PPL pilot is drilled on resetting breakers. so the best version I have read so far is the electrical fire. makes sense to me

Fire, pops the breakers. Including the aircon units.

My thinking . aviate navigate communicate.

Fire in the cockpit, pilot fly’s, co pilot is putting out fire dealing with breakers etc.

Air con snuffs it pilot turns to closest runway and descends to 8 000 feet

    What happens next?

I have seen wing sections from 747s etc where the aluminum forms a sandwidge with a light honeycomb filler. Very light and it floats.

I have seen the made in Australia carbon fiber tail section for the jumbos. These will not float. Same with the air France next to nothing was found on the water. I would imagine that say if the pilots made a reasonable water landing there would be less breakup thus less flotsam.

The link is missing and now I can't find it but, it stated that the 777 changed course twelve minutes prior to the co-pilot calmly bidding Malay ATC goodnight.
