			Aircraft incidents in the press

It seems that since the earliest days of flight there has woeful reporting of aviation incidents in the press, and the reporting this weekend of the (fortunately non-fatal) crash at Coffs Harbour was no exception. The subject aircraft was variously described as a Chipmunk and an ultralite and performing aerobatics and acrobatics.

Where do these journos get off ?

I add this link to lighten the post: The Lazy Journalists Plane Story Generator. If you flick through the choices you find some good ones.

This automatic article writer even allows the journo to include contradictory aircraft types (eg. Boeing PA23) which should suit them well.

As an aviation professional, I am appalled at the way my industry is represented in the press. Even the so-called aviation experts (think Geoffrey Thomas here) have very little respect in the industry due to the oft ill-informed things said, and a perception as a mouthpiece for QF agendae.

Having said that, there are professional pilots who might make a rational, correct media statement, but frequently it's cut and pasted by the media to suit another agenda and bears little resemblance to what was said.

There was a time where you have News Limited as an owner of Ansett and you used to see QF as the punching bag. A QF diversion due to a indication error on a gauge - which is the safest possible option - was dramatic "seconds from death" front page news when most other airlines would probably take a calculated risk and push on and ignore it. Then media owner ships changed around the airlines in the crosshairs would change.

It makes me very sceptical of anything I hear in the media from any other profession about which I know little - i.e. medicine, law etc.

I passed along this story generator to a couple of mates and the first thing each said was - Wow! That's how Geoffrey does it! Ha Ha

Yep, Geoffrey Thomas isn't exactly high on my list of credible journalists. The tv special he did featuring several scenario's of missing flight MH370 was over-dramatised, sensationalised, ill-informed and basically ****-poor journalism.

He seems to be one of those journo's who get used by the media to push whatever barrow is flavour of the month. Like others I know in aviation, I pretty much ignore the bulk of what he says that goes out for general consumption. In aviation specific journals he fares a little better though.
