Here is a picture of an L748 Connie from the cockpit somewhere over South Korea a few years ago:

And a lost DC10 I came across last week in Bali!

It's the 120kt cruise - 2deg of latitude every hour - makes nav simple

... and on a hot day you can sit on the ramp (tethered of course) and cool your heels

The Yanks had an interesting array of aircraft in service in SVN and despite it being well and truly the jet age, the Douglas skyraiders and the good old DH Beaver and Otters did admirable service. I have a shot of a C46 loading up in Saigon somewhere, but I will have to trawl through a lot of shots to find it.
Another interesting transport aircraft was the C123 Providor and the only one I ever travelled in had more bullet holes than metal in the fuselage and it was a wet stormy monsoonal day that particular day. I came out absolutely drenched after a 30 minute flight from Saigon to Vung Tau.

I am led to believe that these particular aircraft were originally designed as a glider and the engines were put on as an afterthought. I have no idea how true this is.
Last shot is the good old C130 (and an early one at that), my transport back home again. Someone will be able to tell whether it was one of the old "A"s, or one of the brand new, at that time, "E" Model. (I think it was an "A" as the extra fuel tanks were outboard whereas the "E" I think had the tanks between the motors.

By the way I am glad that this is in the aircraft section and not the photography section as my photography leaves a bit to be desired, especially in the 60's!
    Regards
    Glen
It's an "A" model Glen , easily identified by the 3 blade prop. The "E's" had engine upgrade with 4 blade prop.

Ju-52. The most successful of a long line of all metal Junkers transport aircraft from 1913. They were in many respects the German equivalent of the DC3, but came into service a little earlier, and hence retained fixed undercarriage and three engines, instead of retractable and only two. But they were "good enough", and German efforts to replace them never got anywhere - in the same way that 'DC-3 replacements' got nowhere for thirty years after WW2, despite the fact that all the DC-3s in use by then were at least thirty years old.

Ju-52s continued to operate commercially in out of the way places probably into the 1980s.

And the DC3 is is still in use with turboprops as the Basler Turbo 67. I became aware of them when I saw Prince Harry get out of one in Antarctica.

Well, you learn something new every day. I thought the DC3 was pensioned off years ago.
