And like the TSR-2 et al, we might be wondering why and who was responsible for the demise of these aeroplanes...
Or was it all down to incompetence and institutional stupidity ??? .![]()

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food
A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

That brought back happy memories. 2.5 years in HOSM 1975 thru mid 77, doing initial ground runs on new S2's & then 1980 thru 84 in Laarbruch with 15/16 Sqns as the RR FSR. A nice Land Rover Series 3 around the 40 minute mark!
You were at Laarbruch in 80-84? We were at Wildenrath 81-85 and had friends over in Laarbruch. Can't remember their names at the moment, it'll come to me.
I was actually based at RAF Bruggen at 431MU, but covered Laarbruch & Wildenrath Phantom Sqn's 19/92 as well. Spent a lot of time driving between all 3 bases. Lived in Vekenekoten & did most of our shopping across the border in Roermond. Just hoped you weren't the 28th car at the border check that got stopped & had their meat confiscated! We got away with it for 4 years! I really enjoyed those 4 years even with the cold war raging all around, tacevals, minivals funny suits & gas masks!![]()
We were down in Kaiserslautern (based at USAF Ramstein) in the mid 70s, living in Erkelenz (based at Wildenrath) in early 80s, then living at Weeze (based at Laarbruch) late 80s early 90s.
Living in Erkelenz, we used to duck over the border to shop often, our nearest Chinese takeaway was in Holland.
Happy days.![]()
