    The remarkable Feiseler Storch.

Fore runner to the Porter, one of the most remarkable aircraft of pre war Germany.

There were a lot of remarkable aircraft produced in this period, and that is one of them. There was never much place for them in a civilian world though, and their military role has been pretty much taken over by helicopters.

Successors would be the Do-27 and Pilatus Porter, both of which have the advantage of using more modern mainstream engines.

Apart from its amazing flying properties, the thing that struck me when I saw one in the USA (French Criquet version) was the size of the thing. It’s bigger than it looks in pictures and on film. Kind of like the Short Stirling being a lot larger than a Lancaster didn’t compute in my head for a while.

    Yeah cool things.

I recall first learning of these through the old "Commando" comics when I was a kid....

I've never actually seen a Storch in the flesh, but I have been a passenger in both Do27 and Turbo-Porter in PNG.

Not in the same class, but other interesting aircraft are the Helio Courier (when I was working in PNG there was an Airfast Pilot who made a practice of taking off across the airstrip) and the Wren 460.
