In about 2000 Boeing acquired McDonnell-Douglas. This seems to have been a reverse takeover, with the McDonnell-Douglas management and corporate culture taking over. In 2001 the company HQ moved from Seattle (where they had built planes since 1916), to Chicago, and the entire management was gradually taken over by MBAs and the engineers moved out of management. As much technical work as possible was outsourced.
With no long term career path at Boeing, the good engineers either left or did not even start. Their present situation is the inevitable result of this process.
