    Stuck on Lake Eyre

A bit of a long article, but just proves how one thing can lead to another!

    Getting ready to go remote

Getting ready to go remote | Flight Safety Australia

When David Geers set off in his amphibious SeaRey aircraft for Lake Eyre in remote South Australia in March 2015, he certainly wasn’t intending to get stuck.

Not sure that I get your drift there, mate.

I once flew a helicopter right across Australia, from Caloundra to Jandakot. Some of that was over places that were definitely remote!

That particular fairway was quickly tagged "the Qantas approach" by the local golfers

Pretty much what it said. No disrespect intended. Bangkok IS a fair way from Lake Eyre, after all.

Good article. Pilot had everything he needed, except local knowledge. Breaking through the crust is reasonably common, and recovery is difficult. If he'd known that he wouldn't have attempted what he did.

BTW, I've never been there, but I do read a lot.

I don't have my own photo unfortunately, but I landed and parked overnight right alongside this place. Nobody batted an eye! The next morning the owners young daughter asked me if I could take her for a joy flight. (she was just a kid) My late father was with me, so left him there, did a quick turn around the block and came back and picked him up.

A similar thing happened when I arrived in WA at Norseman. I had cargo racks on the old girl to carry a couple of 20 litre drums of fuel, and as there was no airport to be found, I landed on the side of the road right across from a petrol station to get some fuel. Filled up with the highest octane petrol that they had, and off we went! While all this was going on the coppers came along and drove right past me! I later found out that there was an accident exercise going on out on the Eyre highway and I suppose that they thought I was part of that!

All this was of course back a good few years ago and I suppose if I tried it now I would have been locked up. Would sure beat border closures anyway!
