My experience of some Americans during the Vietnam War was not really one of Gung Ho, but Gee Whizz. Like, " Gee Whizz, they are shooting at us. ". The RAN 's experience of the Air National Guard was when a Guard aircraft attacked the Hobart, at night just north of the DMZ, firing several air to air missiles and killing and wounding sailors. Their excuse? Gee whizz, we thought you were an enemy helicopter.
As far as I am aware, the National Guard helicopter units did not serve in Vietnam:

During the Vietnam War the Administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson decided upon a draft to enhance active duty troop strength rather than calling on large numbers of the National Guard and Reserves.[177] As a result, membership in a reserve component, including the Army National Guard, became a way to avoid combat service in an unpopular war.[178][179] Amid accusations of favoritism in enlistment and "easy" service when compared to duty in Vietnam, the reputation of the Army National Guard declined even as enlistments increased.

Despite the decision not to call up the National Guard in full force, some units were activated, and individual National Guard members volunteered to be mobilized. Among the Army National Guard units mobilized during the Vietnam War were Artillery battalions from Kentucky and New Hampshire, and an Engineer company from Vermont. Company D (Long Range Patrol) 151st Infantry Regiment, Indiana Army National Guard, was the only National Guard Infantry unit to serve in Vietnam.[181] During the Vietnam War, 76 Army National Guard units were called up to active duty, it is estimated that 13,000 Army National Guard members were mobilized during this time.[182][183]
Several Army National Guard units were deployed to Southeast Asia and served in Vietnam, including:

Nothing to do with American helicopters at all. The US aircraft [ which was identified as one from a guard squadron] said they thought Hobart was a North Vietnamese helicopter. Read the article " the sinking of PCF19 as seen from PCF 12" as to how they may have thought that.

The Ospreys crash a lot. There's been enough crashes of them in Japan for it to be a political issue.
Blackhawks also used to be said to crash a lot.
