I saw the same footage a couple of days ago, the first thing that struck me was, what are people and a dog doing within the airside perimeter? Granted, the humans may have had legitimate reason, but surely random lap dogs do not? I would have thought the only canine presence permissible would have been highly trained security pooches.

Heart in mouth praying he had enough airspeed to maintain lift to clear those buildings. Don't see too many possible alternative spots to put down. Excellent job. Good stuff from the tower as well.

Bankstown is a GA airfield. Folk were probably preparing to fly out themselves, so the people are explainable. 100% agree about an unrestrained dog there. Folk can take their mutt with them, but having it loose like that will result in questions, I imagine.

To be fair, as I recall, the yappy thing was on a lead.

On second viewing I agree, one of those extendable jobs.

Very skilful handling by the pilot! The bloke is from Sud Ifrica and is also the owner of the aircraft. Young lady didn't seem too bothered about it all!

He called engine problem, but it should be noted that he did not extend the landing gear, which saved his skin! Also may have pulled the prop into fine pitch, which on most aircraft will also reduce the drag and extend the glide with a dead engine.

He only just had enough height to make it after the engine failed. It was about two minutes from the engine failure to touchdown. This did not leave much spare time to think, but leaving the gear up was definitely the right decision. while the gear on the 210 does not increase drag very much, there is substantial drag while it is in transit, which takes a significant amount of time, and increases the risk of problems if you touch down on obstacles such as taxiway markers/lights, drainage ditches etc (I have significant time in a 210).

looks like he spudded it in on a service taxiway... IIRC outside of the strictly controled area of an airfield with generally aviation related businesses or maintenance facilities in the area.

the blue area is an aviation related area but its not "airside" (the green bit) and for the life of me, I can not recall what the hell its called. But depending on the management requirements of the area many things could be permissable.

I think there was a small amount of good luck that nothing was being taxied or driven in the area when he came in, Some airfields have taxiways that double as runways in emergencies (or intent for landing small aircraft in cross winds)
