Personally I would not even think about a Freelander. To many problems which is probably why it is going cheap.
I echo the above sentiment, but that rattle you describe is a common KV6 engine problem, loose intake manifold throtle plates. TRS in Adelaide do exchange modified intake manifolds for these. Easy to fit and about $ 50% of a new one
Still, I wouldn't be worried about fixing it if you aren't going to buy it

so is it an item that needs fixing or can u drive it without too much trouble for a while ?

						The jerky gear change between 2nd and 3rd (steptronic auto) is a valve in the Jatco box - common charactoristic but nuisance only. The jirk is felt more when the torque mount that stabilises the rear diff needs replacing. Try replacing that mount and see how you feel about it. Made a difference for me.
