Hi there, i`m stuck big style need some advice please.......i have a 1998 freelander 1.8 petrol model and my viscous coupling on the prop shaft is on its way out. Does anyone know of a company in Australia possibly in WA that will strip down and refurbish the viscous coupling. Quotes for a new one are over $1200.
Kind Regards John.

How do you know your VCU is on its way out. They cannot be easily refurbished - certainly not in Australia.

The car started making a noise when moving like as if the brakes were binding, i looked up info on the net and pointers were the viscous coupling so i removed the prop shaft and the noise went.
I think that is a good call. You might want to try and confirm using one or two of the tests indicated on this site. By the sound of what you have described the reverse test on full lock on a grippy surface should stall the engine.
Don't drive it with the tail shaft in as you will kill your IRD.
When mine failed a few years back VCUs were almost $3500 - a lot cheaper these days.
I would be tempted to go the one on Ebay it is brand new and decent second hand ones will cost close to that and they are an unknown quality.

Yeah Garry i shopped around and got a brand new vcu and the 2 centre bearings coming on 4 day delivery from England for the same price as a second vcu here.
Thats great - forget to mention before to put new bearings in - I assume the VCU you are getting is complete with the damper on it - sometimes for some silly reason some advertise just the VCU and the damper is extra.

I just received this quote this morning from Products - Bell Engineering
We can ship to Australia but the cheapest option I can find would be £97.00 (UKsterling)
As the units are supplied on an exchange basis we would have to charge a surcharge of £75.00
but obviously that would be cheaper and marginally less hassle for you than returning your old unit.
Total cost therefore would be £372.00 - we would require payment in UK sterling and if you are interested in placing an order we will let you have our bank details to enable you to make the payment. As soon as the bank confirms payment we would despatch the unit - delivery would take 3-5 working days. Obviously we will need your full delivery address. The unit will carry a 12 month warranty.
