    FL1 rear door tears...

    Lads,

    The Freeo's been a great addition to the Land Rover stable (shares it with my D2). She's noisy (L series Dieso), vibrates to buggery and has a new rattle every day, but I love driving it. It handles brilliantly and I never slow for road bumps! But the rear door is a shocker, Nothing works (can't unlock it, window failed down, wiper inop, demister inop) so am looking at a replacement rear door. Any clues? For a start, how can I unlock the door when the lock servo isn't working?

    Cheers

    PS - I can see why they went for the regular hatch on the FL2's!

    Is it the door that has the problems or is it the CCU as it controls all these functions. Do you have a wiring diagram?

    As Woko says, the functions on the rear door (as well as other stuff) is controlled by an ECU.

    You can get into a diags mode on this ECU by using a procedure with the Ign & fog light switch. I don't have the procedure to hand but I'll see if I can dig it out.

    Once into the diag mode, you can cycle through the various functions of the ECU by pressing the Central Door Lock (CDL) switch. As you press the switch, it tests the different functions (horn, flashes lights, etc...) and you'll find that among these is one to drop the rear window and unlatch the rear door.

    This test will help you narrow down where the problem lies... i.e. is it the ECU output or ECU input.

    From there, you'll hopefully know where to look.

    Here you go:

    There is a self test diag mode which you can get into with a sequence of button presses & ign key turns. IIRC - It's:

    1 - Ign off.
    2 - Ign on.
    3 - Press fog light.

    Repeat 4 times within 2 sec!!! If done correctly, the car should beep, at which point, leave the ign on.

    From there, press the CDL (central locking) switch and it will cycle through the various different things that the ECU controls. One of which will be the rear window.

    When you get to the rear window test, it will drop the window, then the next time you press the CDL, it'll open the rear door. If the rear door unlocks without the rear window dropping, chances are, you've got a buggered motor!

    Further down I found a better description:

    * Press & hold fog lamp switch.
    * Turn ignition off.
    * Turn ignition to position II.
    * Release fog lamp switch.

    There should be a beep to signal that you are now into the self test.

    They say that you've got 4 seconds to complete this sequence but I've found
    it to be more like 1 second!!!!

    ...I think it needs to be repeated a couple of times though (it has been a while since I used it)!

    Mate, you forgot to add, stick left big toe into right ear hole!
    Cheers for the tips. The motor for the window is buggered, I know that already. It just the unlocking of the door that's the main issue. The window is set 95% full up so I can open and close. I'll try the reset steps. I have a manual for the car, so have access to diagrams.

    Thanks again

    Note: It's not a 'Reset', it's a diagnostics mode.

    If you cycle through the tests in the diag mode and the rear door opens, then you'll know that it is the door handle at fault (i.e. the input to the ECU).

    FWIW - It is not uncommon for the little spring, inside the handle, to rust and snap. This causes the handle to not release the microswitch and can confuse the rear door.

    If the rear window is knackered already, why not get yourself the dits to fix the rear mechanism (either a complete mech or one of the repair kits) and do the whole lot in one go. Replacing the window mechanism is a doddle!
