Need help to find a reliable mechanic for timing belt and head gasket.

    Hi everyone,

I need to service my freelander, replace timing belt and probably also the head gasket due to some water desapearing from the coolant tank with no visible leaking.

I've been in my every day mechanic and he refused to touch the car saying that the freeby was to complicated...

After that I went to a landrover specialist (very big garage) at Highbury Road (SE, Melbourne, close to Box Hill) and the guy said that he could do both things for about $1,800 and that he could not give me warranty on the head gasket service due to it complexity, and future possible problems with the gasket going out of place after the service. After hearing that form a landrover specialist I've got lost!!! Not sure if the guy is a fake specialist or if freeby is such a bad and complex car?

    Appreciate any help!!!

    Thanks, Luiz

You haven't told us what engine you are talking about (there are four in the FL1) but I assume it is the 1.8 petrol. The price for a headgasket change and timing belt change and associated work would seem about right and I doubt anyone would warrant head gasket related work for a 1.8.

If it is a L series diesel than they should warrant their work.

Something tells me the car is a V6.
On this side there are a lot of shops that will refuse to touch a Freeby V6.
To illustrate a few year ago a Denver based owner in a neighboring state blew a rod out of the block.
With a leg out of bed he was towed into Omaha Nebraska and then to the local dealer.
The service writer came out before the vehicle was discharged from the roll back tow rig saying "you will have to take that to Denver we don't touch that **** here".

There's tech in the south store who can fix it or some Limey/Auzzie type who does the same in Golden. Take your pick!

I was quoted over $2000 for a timing belt change on a 2001 Freelander V6 (I believe it has 3 belts and is a big job). I sold the Freelander!! Also at the same time the Auto Tranny started to play up again after a complete rebuild two years prior. So that came into the descision to sell it.

Give Damien from Peninsula Rangie a call located in Frankston everyone down the peninsula use him and he is very reasonable on prices, I wouldn't use anybody else his number is 9783 4303, he purely specializes in Rangies and Landies so knows what he is on about

    Best of luck

    Thanks guys!!!

    Thanks everyone for the help.

I forgot to mention my freeby is a 2002 kv6.

I will give the recommended mechanics a call and see what happens.

I bought freeby 18 months ago, I knew at that time that the car had some issues but as it was the car that my wife wanted and I also liked we decided to buy and I have to say 2 days after we bought her she stoped working and we had to spend $6,000 to replace the gear box. That was the result to trust some one and buy a car without roadworthy.

    Well things from life...

    Thanks a lot everyone.

    Will try the garages recommended

    Cheers,

    Luiz
