    Steptronic Gearbox Problem FL1 V6

I have a 2001 V6 FL1 with a Steptronic Gearbox. The gearbox has recently developed a problem. When the car is cold, the gearbox will slip, almost like its gone into neutral, however, once the car has been driven for several K's and the engine, and I assume gearbox has warmed up, the problem appears to go away. If I drive the car in the morning, I can jump into it a few hours later, and it will drive fine. However, if I leave it all day, and the car has cooled down, and then jump into it, the problem will be there again.
Fortunately I live on a quiet country road and for most driving can drive the long way to town and by the time I hit traffic the car is running fine, but once or twice a week I have to go to a large centre for work, and it can get hairy in the evenings after work.
Like most FL1 owners, I love driving the car, but gosh its cost me some money thru the years.
Does anyone out there have a cause and therefore solution to my problem? Thanks!

    Thx

Woko Thanks for your reply. It's easier said than done to check the oil level in this gearbox. There is nothing in the manual on how to go about it. Nothing in the maintenance section of the manual about what maintenance needs to be done on this gearbox. The mechanic I use is doing an impersonation of Robot on Lost in Space... he's flaying his arms about wildly while crying warning, warning, danger Will Robinson.

He is probably right to do so. If the gearbox requires replacement (and they do all too often) it will cost megadollars.

Get a copy of the RAVE CD, pretty sure it is covered in that.
Otherwise maybe someone nice will print the relevant section out for you.

Remove the tray underneath, The oil temp needs to be at 40'c, which is hard to do if you don't have a computer to talk to it, but you can run it from cold for 5 min idling it will be close. There is a plug on the bottom of the gear box which takes a 4 or 5mm allen key, undo this while engine is running. and fill until oil dribbles out. DO NOT UNDO THE TORX BOLT near the drain and level plug. this is the reverse gear band anchor. The box will need to be stripped to refit.
Use the correct oil. I use valvoline max life.
if needed to repair parts can be difficult to buy. You can can solenoids from land rover. internal parts I have been getting from Mazda as the MPV uses the same gear box. Its a jatco JF506e
