    Engine light coming on

Howdy folks, my sister has a 2005 TD4 Freelander. However it has an engine light that comes on intermitantly. When it comes on the vehicle seems to go into a safe mode and will not exceed 100kms. Is completely at random when it flashes on normally for a couple of seconds. The local garage (none LR) has suggested a speed sensor is faulty? Have any fellow Freelander owners had a similar problem? Other wise car is perfectly fine, and runs like a dream other than when the light pops up.
    Thanks in advance

When the light comes on the ECU ignores one, some or all sensors and used a programmed default setting for the sensors.

The car needs to get the codes read which will either tell what the fault is or at least point in the right direction.

Seems is definately speed sensor malfunction. Has anyone had problems with these in their Freelanders? How easy are they to replace. It may even end up being a loose wire or similar. Heres hoping.

If I remember correctly (and I may be wrong) but the speed system uses the ABS system for its speed input - specifically the drivers front ABS sensor. The the signal is sent from the wheel to the ABS ECU as required to manage Brakes/traction control/HDC or to the engine ECU to manage engine functions that require a speed input.

So if the sensor itself was playing up you would most likely also have the three amigos (ABS, HDC and TC lights). If this is not the case I would suspect a fault with the interface between the brake and engine management systems and I cannot help with this.

definately no three amigos happening. it seems to do it when she needs a bit of extra power to go up hills. comes on for a few seconds then goes off. Car slows down when it happens. hopefully we can get to the bottom of it lol. thanks

I have a diagnostic tool which would plug in and confirm the codes logged.

The light coming on and the car slowing down is the ECU detecting the fault and the ECU then using default settings for sensors (basically limp mode). You need to get someone who knows how to deal with it or study documentation which will show where the fault is likely to be.

    Good luck with it.
