Thread: 2004 td4 auto trans flarring?

I used to own a 2001 KV6 FL1 with a Jatco Auto Box and I can tell you they are VERY fussy as to the fluid used. I would be tempted not to drive the vehicle until you sort the problem because I can tell you from sad experience Jatco boxes are very expensive to fix. Try this...

Oh, welcome to the Forum by the way, I see you have had the usual response from so-called "mechanics" who throw their arms up in the air if you rock up in a Freelander, get used to it, if the vehicle is not the usual Jap/Korean/Aussie cars, it's all too hard for them.!!!

thanks ausfree, i will call the A&B transmission ppl next week and see if they can help. i called a local auto guy and he wasn't helpful at all and quoted me 6k! to rebuild it and wouldn't guarantee that it would work?? no thanks!

I have stopped driving it for now and will try and track down some texaco oil.

hopefully hear from woko on any possible causes or diagnosis that i could do myself.

Everyone is telling me to cut my losses and get rid of it but theres something about it that makes me not want to give up on it yet. just love driving the thing

The transmission is a Jatco JF506E and are used by a number of manufactures. Jag list a shell oil, Mazda list there own oil which is Castrol
They are fussy on oil, You will only get the Texaco N402 from a dealer. Castrol recommend Transmax Z. There a heaps of different types of Transmax.
Was it Transmax Z that you used?

I would recheck the oil level again.
Do you have RAVE disc? As there is a bit of a procedure to check levels.

got a RAVE disc and checked oil level correctly and had to top up with 3 litres of tranny fluid!

no wonder it was acting up it was screaming for some oil.

Anyway its sorted now and changing gears smoothly and only cost $48 for a bottle of oil (plus $600 for the mechanics to scratch their heads)

My only concern now is that i topped it up with Castrol transmax Z which is a honey colour and the fluid that was in there already was a red colour.

How fussy is the box? would different brand oils and colours make any difference?

That's the recommended oil from castrol. It will be fine. Colour is no issue as its a dye put in. The fuss with them is people don't put a recommended oil in them and it doesn't work with the clutch plates. Mineral based oils won't work in this box, must be a synthetic dex3. Transmax z meets and exceeds this standard. I have used valvoline maxlife in them with no issues. It's red but is the same grade as transmax z
