When you had the cylinder head off did you check for slipped liners?

Oil in my coolant 1998 Freelander 1.8 petrol
Hey just wondering if anyone can help me out.. I have oil in the coolent reservoir on my 1.8 freelander 1998. I thought it was a head gasket as I have been told they go all the time so I replaced that. When I took it off I didnt see any obvious signs of where it could be leaking and my car was running fine but I put it all back together and it still builds up oil in the coolent.. does anyone know where this is probably coming from? I have a feeling it might be the oil pump but not 100 percent sure. There is no coolent in the oil either. So any suggestions would be great thanks

Was the cylinder head flat. I had to get a cylinder head machined.
Yeah had my head machined and pressure tested. As for the liners they were all the same same they stuck up about 1mm or 2mm but didnt realise one could slip. And with the cracked block did you have coolent in the oil aswell?
In my case it was a Peugeot and a Lancia. From memory on the Peugeot there was some oil in the water and on the Lancia it was water into one of the cylinders.
Oil pressure is (hopefully) higher than coolant pressure, so small cracks are often a one way street. You could try Chemi-Weld. Depends if you're after a short or long term fix.

Check to see if the Engine oil is routed through the radiator (Engine oil cooler line) .... If Yes ... then Disconnect the Engine oil line to it.
Then pressure test the radiator and see if there is a hole in the Oil cooler line of the radiator.
Oldest gag (so to speak) in the book >>> blown gaskets? ... nope, Holed oil cooler line in the radiator.
Cheers

Which reminds me ... Doesn't the IRD unit (Transfer box) have radiator coolant running through it ? ... From memory, the coolant tube runs inside IRD unit, springs a leak, then mixes oil in the coolant that ends up destroying the IRD unit.
So ... check the condition of the oil in that box.
