    KV6 life-proofing...

    Hi all
Thought this too long a post for the FB page...

We currently have failing KV6. Misfiring, filling up the coolant reservoir etc (not that you'd know from the temp gauge, hahaha!).

I have my eye on a running donor engine which will get us back on the road and then rebuild the original motor at leisure, be it just heads or liners too.

However I'm thinking of ways to improve the life of this motor in Australia, yes there are some inherent issues with liners, early head gaskets and brittle thermostat housings - most of which can be circumvented. Metal thermo conversion, composite gaskets and...top hat liners?

But it seems the main enemy of this thing in Aus is the fact that it allegedly runs at 110*C to comply with EU emissions regulations and combined with a Perth summer it's doomed! Now this is where I need some advice. I was thinking of having a custom radiator made with increased surface area and volume in an attempt to bring the normal running temp down.

What if any systems would there be that would conspire to keep the operating temp where originally designed?

Or am I on the wrong track entirely? No, I'm not going to throw it out or convert it to diesel - unless someone has a fully dressed Td4 going for free

    Cheers
    Mike

I couldn't tell you what temps they run at but they will boil with no radiator cap on, so it would be up there. A cooler thermostat will drop the operating temp rather than a bigger radiator. You can't change the thermostat in the plastic housings but it may be possible in the alloy ones avaliable.
In traffic it will still get to the higher temps as it won't run the fans until it gets to its set temp, but you may be able to find someone that can reflash the ecm to operate fans at a cooler temps.

    not sure about the fans--
but when V8 D2 owners are worried about this heat problem, one of the options is fitting a Freelander thermostat.
The Thor V8 runs at 96 from the factory, a change of thermostat can see it run middle 80's

and what is it with LR and ****ty liners??

Its a large investment but Tophat liners and MLS gaskets should extend the cars life considerably--

Surely an engine rebuild (with top hat liners ) on an FL1 would over capitolise ? Not a vehicle i would waste money on.

Woko, I wasn't sure if the metal thermos were still readily available, I think someone on one of the UK fora was making them?

Good idea about changing the fan temp, or possibly just bypassing with an adjustable control unit from Kenlowe etc?

Pedro, from the image that looks like a page from RAVE, so yes, that's the factory one. It was a guy on one of the UK pages that designed and manufactured alloy thermo housings to replace the rubbish, sealed factory ones that of course were stuck in Rover 75s, MGs and the S Type Jag as well as our little Freelander.
It also meant you could put different thermostats in, as Dave Dover said to me, "Running at those temps, they could be marginal in the UK, what were they thinking sending them here?"
    Cheers

I found an email address for the mysterious Kaiser - no idea if it's still current - asking about the metal thermo housings...we shall see.
