    Crappy Day

Still working on my 101 and today was supposed to be the big day to get all my brake bits and start installing them - but over shadowed by the Hippo.

Over the past day or so I have been getting the occasional smell of coolant. This morning on the way to get some 101 bits, steam starting coming out of the engine area.

On inspection it was clear that some coolant had been sprayed around but no drip drip. As a precaution I bought 4 litres of coolant and nearly 2 litres went in. When I got home still no drip drip when hot and at idle - hmmm on reving coolant pouring out at the front.

To cut a long story short there is one of those hoses at the front that have no seperate T junctions and they are all moulded - this hose is in fact 3 hoses in one and the main join had a split and there was also another small hole. Why do they put these crappy hoses in.

I ring the stealer - he asks for Vin - I indicate 98 Diesel - sorry cannot help as he has 5 versions listed - I explain there is only 1 - sorry.

So I call back with the Vin - now it is none of the 5 versions and is a different one - none in stock - will have on Monday - good. 4wds in Melbourne price is $155 plus postage - stealer $103. At least that is a win.

As I still need to drive I put the pipe back in and carry 5 litres of coolant with me - is ok for local trips as I am getting 5km per litre of coolant.

I picked up my 101 brake bits - Mastercard is wonderful but 4 rubber brake hoses were $180 - ouch.

When I get home I pull my mobile out of my pocket only to find the screen is busted - that will be another $300 to replace

So an expensive and frustrating day - but why do Landrover put these silly radiator hoses in which are designed to fail - I understand Discos have them too.

    Grumble

Sorry to hear of your woes, but I think that pricing is actaully pretty reasonable. From memory a clutch hose and a rear brake hose cost me $60, and that was trade price. $180 retail for four is pretty good.

    I know how you feel.....

hope everything gets sorted soon. That price isnt bad for such a crazy hose.

I had a Saab 900 once that had a hose like that. It failed too. The thing that annoys me most about this design is if you need an emergency or make shift repair it is difficult as it is most likely to break at the join in the T junction.

As cars get older I seem to car less about what is genuine and correct and more about what works. In this case I would try to remove the fabricated T and see if it could be replaced with a metal T junction. Of course this would take more time and sometimes you just need the car to work.

Well I picked up the hose from the stealer this morning - the hose is no longer one piece - has metal T junctions - they have done away with the vulcanised pipe joins

Also price was $103 - non stealer suppliers were $135 and $155 plus shipping - the stealer was much cheaper.
