FL1 Gearbox Synchros, Bearings and Seals

In the next few months I will have to replace the clutch in my L series Freelander. As the gearbox is best removed and the car has done 250,000km I thought it would be a good opportunity to replace the synchros, bearings and seals.

Has anyone worked on earlier Freelander gearboxes and can advise the best place to get these parts in Australia. Other than the dealers, British 4wd is one of the better places to get new Freelander parts but they do not carry much in the way of gearbox bits - though I I am sure they would get them from the UK if I asked.

I assume some of the bearings and seals can be sourced from good bearing shops but the synchros will have to come from the dealers or a specialist.

Also any idea on which synchros wear most - I am having trouble with 1st gear on hot days but I think this is related to a worn out clutch (or worn out spigot bearing) more than a gearbox issue.

Any thoughts where I can get these parts in Australia (other than dealers) - I can always go to the UK but would prefer to look local first.

    Thanks

    Garry

My usual suggestion, British Motor Imports. Very good to me during engine builds, etc. They supply alot of workshops, so have a large range usually delivered with a day or two.

    Cheers!

You might also give any local MG specialists a try. The early MG F has virtually the same gearbox as your Freelander.
I know our local gearbox guy has rebuilt versions of each using parts from each.

I rang them today about parts for my TD4 Freelander Gearbox, IRD & slip coupling Was told that all parts are non servicable would have to buy new!!
    $2500 IRD $3000 gearbox & $1500 slip coupling.
I should have bought the wife a defender as a second car.

IRD is serviceable but bits would have to be sourced from the UK (rebuild kits are often advertised on ebay UK), gearboxes are also serviceable (again I suspect parts from the UK - hence the questions on the thread).

From a dealer perspective, these are listed as non-serviceable which only means Land rover was too lazy to stock the component parts.

By slip coupling, I assume you mean Viscous Coupling - as far as I can tell these cannot be serviced however they can be bought on exchange in the UK so I suspect that someone has worked out how to work on them.

If you need any major component bits check UK suppliers.
